How the YouTube clickbait detector behaves, what it reads, and how to read a score.

What is YTBait?

YTBait is a free Chrome YouTube clickbait detector. It answers: does this video deliver what the title and thumbnail promised?

It is not a summarizer, like-ratio rater, recommender, or ad blocker. It is an impartial verdict layer for viewers who want to know before they click.

How scoring works

For a video page, YTBait roughly does the following:

Collect metadata

Title, channel, duration, and thumbnail context where available.

Fetch transcript

Captions when YouTube exposes them for the video.

Evaluate with rubric

Promise vs delivery, sensationalism, filler, and substance.

Return the verdict

A 1–10 honesty / clickbait score plus a short plain-language note.

Higher scores mean the packaging matches the content. Lower scores mean bait, overclaim, or empty delivery — the classic title and thumbnail mismatch.

Score guide

Critical

1–3

High clickbait risk. Title or thumbnail substantially misrepresents the content.

Neutral

4–6

Mixed value — packaging is stretched, padded, or only partly delivered.

Optimal

7–10

Packaging is largely honest. Content delivers on the title/thumbnail promise.

Data & privacy

YTBait analyzes video metadata and transcripts.
It does not need your Google login to score a public video.
Personal browsing history is not the product input — the current video context is.

Limitations

No captions → limited or no full score.
Satire, sketch comedy, and intentionally absurd packaging can confuse pattern-based scoring.
A high honesty score is not a quality, accuracy, or moral endorsement.
Model versions change; historical scores may shift when rubrics improve.
